Things I liked about this novella: firstly, it highlights the tension of international home-stay situations, something I’m familiar with. It involves language play and the difficulties students new to English have with our idiom, again, something I’m familiar with. Oh, and it has a dinosaur, something any good speculative read should include. Reflective and provoking, this is just the quirky novella you’ve been looking for. Bree Dinosaur SHORTCUTS Book 3 eBook AC Buchanan Reviews
I thoroughly enjoyed this (although I found the numerous cakes mentioned in the narrative a little upsetting as I was reading the novella in a house in which there were no cakes to be had). Observant and introspective, Cam is an engaging and compelling character. I enjoyed seeing familiar Wellington spots through her perspective and the subtle undercurrent of homesickness and cultural displacement set up an intriguingly eerie mood before events get strange and mysterious.
Lost children and (apparently) extinct species are interwoven in both Cam's tragic family history and the secrets of Bree, the moody teenage daughter of Cam's host family. I don't want to spoil the ending but it shows how connections and understanding can be formed between very different people in extreme circumstances.
(I'm sort of hoping for a sequel Thanh's turtle).
